On behalf of millions of older persons of India, Himanshu Rath of Agewell Foundation (an NGO working for the welfare of older persons across the country) has expressed gratitude towards Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee for keeping in mind concerns of older persons.

It’s a welcome change. At last the government has taken a note of precarious condition of older people. After a long-awaited demand, older persons in the age-group of 60-65 years will also be treated as Senior Citizens by Income tax departments.  With revised budget provisions, now they are eligible for tax benefits and reliefs allowed to senior citizens. Earlier income tax-exemption limits for senior citizens were allowed to only older persons who were above 65 years.

This budget has increased income tax slab for senior citizens upto 2.5 lakh. With provision of tax exemption upto Rs. 5 lac for senior citizens above the age of 80, most vulnerable section of senior citizens have also got special treatment in this budget. With increasing inflation rate day by day, senior citizens were expecting such kind of schemes from finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.
