New Delhi, 20th August 2008: Agewell Foundation, an NGO dedicated towards the welfare of Older Persons across the country, today announced the tenth in the series of symposiums titled ‘The Needs & Rights of Older Persons’. This Symposium will take place on 20th August 2008 at Gulmohar Hall, India Habitat Center, Lodi Road, New Delhi. The discussion in the symposium will cover the special medical needs & problems faced by the elderly members of our society. This symposium is dedicated to those elderly who are suffering from Dementia.

Dementia is the loss of mental abilities and most commonly occurs late in life. Of all persons over age 65, 5-8% are demented. This percentage increases considerably with age. The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, accounts for 50-75% of all cases of dementia. Another 20-30% is due to blood vessel disease. The remaining cases result from a variety of less common disorders. Dementia is a serious illness that requires much help from a person’s family members, friends and society to manage.

Today, treatment of Dementia is also available but due to lack of awareness about dementia and its treatment, most of the affected elderly could not get benefits of dementia treatment. There is an urgent need to create awareness among older persons, their family members, their care-givers and as well as in society.

On that occasion Dr. Anoop Kohli, Senior consultant neurologist Indraprastha Apollo Hospital will make a presentation on Dementia & its treatment. Other eminent & professional citizens will also express their views at the symposium and lend their voice to this noble cause.

Speaking about its latest initiative Mr. Himanshu Rath, Founder, Agewell Foundation said, “In furtherance of its professed ideal of providing an honourable healthy & comfortable life to its senior citizens Agewell Foundation is taking a leap forward to create awareness among the society about medical needs & rights of the older persons.
